Currently Derrick is focusing on two key land issues:

  1. Re-development of the Largo Town Center Metro and the surrounding areas as a Transit Oriented Development-Mixed Use Urban Core. This includes:

    • Largo Town Center Sector Plan

    • Regional Medical Center Site Selection Plan

    • 2035 General Plan

  2. The Westphalia Project (Columbia, MD/Reston, VA),  Prince George's County. The implementation of major activity center originally planned in the 2002 General Plan with a Town Center and Central Park to include a major outdoor entertainment and performing arts center. This project has already bought over $100million of state highway infrastructural investment to Pennsylvania Ave (Rt.4) and developer funded upgrades to the interchange at Westphalia Road at Penn. Ave. Nationally reputable home builders like Toll Brothers, Mid-Atlantic, and Ryland Homes have built and have plans to build in a community that at build out will be home to nearly 50,000 new Prince Georgians.

  3. Balance our county budget. In the face of the worst economy seen by any of us, I, along with my colleagues fought to:

    • maintain funding for education at state required levels;

    • increase the number of sworn police officers protecting our citizens each year; and add firefighters and updated fire equipment and apparatus;

    • increase the number of libraries offering Sunday Services and provide the library system with resources to keep pace with technological advancements and

    • eliminate the need for layoffs and reinstate furlough days originally prescribed in the budget proposals received.
